Making of LilyCapsule: The Environment art - Part 1

While brainstorming ideas for environment of my artsona, I realized that if she is going to be inside a home or a house, there's going to be windows. Would I want those to be minimal or a massive window to admire the outdoors? You guessed it; The latter.

This meant, that not only would the house have to be made, but also the outdoors. I've had some ideas and themes I'd like to change between depending on the mood, so from my pool of ideas I chose a cloudy city, hovering high up in the sky. I even sketched it out:

Sketch of Sky Valley

I had referenced the background art from Naruto and some solar punk themed scenes. My scene would include an onsen, a housing district for flightless people, plenty of farms and a restaurant.

And then, I gave it a go. Here's a time lapse of the full process.

Final render of Sky Valley version 1

Needless to say, the scene looked much more gorgeous in my head than how it turned out. The composition is trash, too many colors and too many different kinds of buildings to work with. The eye is not guided well into anything. You can't tell, if it's day or night.

So, this scene has been discarded from the project. If anything, I learned from the experience and will have better game plan for the next one. For next scenes I figured it will be better for me to start with color palette already picked out and compose overall better, before starting to render.

This was also a good perspective practice and I kinda like how the onsen and its tree turned out!

I might use some of the aspects from this file for other projects; I loved the simple colored distant buildings and the sky.

With this post, I can delete the notes from Milanote regarding this scene. It's removed from the final vision after all, so it's better to leave it in memory, rather than my notes, taking up space.

Bye bye Sky Valley version 1!
